The Bot River Lagoon, a haven for bird enthusiasts, is a prominent birdwatching destination in the scenic Overberg region. Nestled within the Rooisands Nature Reserve, which forms part of the Kogelberg Biosphere, this lagoon boasts a diverse ecosystem of open water, lagoon edges, marshes, and coastal thickets. Visitors can encounter a multitude of bird species, including cormorants, gulls, terns, greater flamingos, great crested grebes, grey and black-headed herons, great white pelicans, and South African shelducks. With luck, one may even catch a glimpse of the feral wild horses descended from animals abandoned by a British garrison after the Anglo-Boer war.
