The largest seaside resort on the German island of Rugen, Binz is a town evoking feelings of the past among modern facilities. The town is decorated with ornate Victorian buildings; the stately Jagdschloss Granitz Castle, with excellent towers and lookout point; and to the north, the weird ruins of Prora, an enormous ‘resort building’ built by the Nazis. Soft sandy beaches and the graceful Strandpromenade along the coast provide idyllic views and sunbathing opportunities. Nature lovers delight in exploring the Jasmund National Park’s ancient beech forests, filled with centennial trees; and its grand chalk cliffs, home to the famous ‘King’s Chair’ - a spectacular, enormous outcrop standing at 118 metres tall. The park is home to several rare and beautiful plant species, such as colourful orchids and the European crab apple, as well as numerous birds including white-tailed eagles.
