Bientang's Cave Seafood Restaurant & Destination is the most unique restaurant setting in the world. This International award-winning restaurant is situated on the shores of Walker Bay and is carved into the depths of a century old cave, in the heart of the best land-based whale watching area in the world.
The cave was named after Bientang, the last known Khoi Strandloper to have lived in the cave. A Strandloper is a member of a Khoisan people who lived on the southern shores of Southern Africa from prehistoric times until the 19th century. ‘Strandloper’ can also be translated as ‘beachcomber’. Bientang lived here at the turn of the 19th Century but mysteriously disappeared. Her cave, the ever-present stream which is still part of the restaurant, the fruit and vegetables she grew – in the same place the restaurant grows its produce and the rich supply of seafood meant that Bientang could be totally self-sufficient. A family of spotted genet cats followed her everywhere and, by all accounts, Bientang had a special connection with the wildlife. Perhaps that’s why the whales return every year to this exact spot at Walker’s Bay.
The restaurant’s delicious menu includes the freshest and tastiest seafood as well as non-seafood delights including meat, poultry, and vegetarian dishes. If you let them know in advance, they will also be able to accommodate food allergies and special dietary requirements.
The whales, seabirds and dassies, not to mention the excellent food, the stunning location and the outstanding wine list which Diners Club awarded their Diamond Award, is why both local and international diners return to feast and whale watch time and time again! Did we mention that Bientang’s Cave, Walker’s Bay, Hermanus is one of the premier whale-watching spots in the world?
