Tucume is found near the northwest coast of Peru, sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountain Range. This historic destination is primarily an archaeological site, however, it offers a unique opportunity to visit monuments and pyramids of the area and learn about the region’s pre-Hispanic heritage. Tucume, known as Purgatorio to locals, is located within the Lambayeque Valley (home to three ancient pyramid cities) and boasts 26 pyramids and mounds – some of which date back to the 10th century and were occupied by numerous civilisations including the Inca. Visit Museo de Sitio de Tucume to learn more about this history and the impressive Lambayeque Valley waterways (both natural and man-made). Finally, note that accommodation is sparse on site and so travellers should check out near-lying towns such as Lambayque for more options.
