Tucked away in the suburb of Rivonia, Liliesleaf Farm is a quiet property purchased by the South African Communist Party in 1961, and became a clandestine headquarters for the African National Congress, Umkhonto we Sizwe, and allied groups. The farmhouse and outbuildings, disguised as a working farm, hosted key figures like Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, and Walter Sisulu during critical planning sessions. The infamous 1963 police raid here led to the Rivonia Trial, resulting in life sentences for many ANC leaders. Now a museum, it features interactive exhibits, preserved structures, and artefacts narrating the liberation movement’s history.
