In 1995, Fernando Polanco and his uncle Galo Plaza met Friedman and Heide Köster, a German biologist couple dedicated to animal rescue. At that time, they were caring for two condors. After becoming acquainted with Rinconada de San Pedro, located within Hacienda Zuleta, they established an aviary for these birds and others that would later arrive. Through donations from private companies and monetary contributions, the cages currently housing six condors were constructed.

Since 2010, Cóndor Huasi has been a part of the National Andean Condor Working Group (Grupo Nacional de Trabajo del Cóndor Andino), collaborating with other organizations in the country dedicated to rescuing, caring for, and breeding condors, whether injured or in poor captive conditions. Simultaneously, education and awareness programs are conducted within local communities to enhance the survival prospects of wild condors.

Currently, the aviary is home to the only two reproductive pairs of condors in the country: Ayu & Inti, parents of Jatun, born in November 2022, and Coya & Tarishka, parents of Toa (residing in Guayllabamba Zoo) and the male Huagcha, born in November 2023. Huagcha's case presented a challenge for the FGPL team, as the parents had to be separated, and the father assumed care of the chick. The full story will be detailed in this document.
