The red sandstone walls of the massive Red Fort rise above the clamour of Old Delhi, reminding visitors of the power and pomp of the Mughal emperors. Built in 1638 to keep out invaders, the walls now mainly block the noise of the city. The Lahore Gate, a symbolic focal point, attracts crowds on Independence Day. Inside, the vaulted arcade of Chatta Chowk leads to a treasure trove of buildings. These include the Drum House, the Hall of Public Audiences, and the white marble Hall of Private Audiences. An evening sound and light show re-creates historical events connected with the fort.
