Located along Japan’s scenic ‘Romantic Road’, just outside Nikko National Park, Nikko is famous for its exquisite ancient temple, as well as the rich fiery shades of its autumn trees. Dating to the 1600s, Toshugu is the country’s most intricately decorated shrine, featuring lavish gold leaf detail, beautiful wood carvings, tiered pagodas and vividly coloured murals. It is set in a tranquil pine forest and contains the tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who established the powerful Tokugawa Shogunate that governed the nation for close to three centuries. Nikko National Park is renowned for its spectacular natural vistas of lakes, waterfalls, mountains and forest.
