Located 140 kilometres from Cape Town on the slopes of the mighty Olifant's River Mountains, Porterville is a pretty town known for its stunning rare flowers, adventure-sports opportunities and extraordinary history. The Disa Uniflower is a unique species which only grows here, and can be seen in huge fields covering the ground in its bright yellow colour. The active sky and powerful thermals offer ideal conditions for flying, and thrill-seekers flock here from around the world to take part in hang-gliding and paragliding off the steep cliffs. Rock art between 300 and 6000 years’ old can be seen in the area, notably an exceptional painting of a sailing ship. Other highlights include: fantastic 4x4 routes, delicious fresh produce at the regular farmers’ markets, and several artisanal eateries and breweries.
