Perched at a height of 1,818 metres high, Pico do Arieiro is Madeira Island's third-highest peak. From here, visitors can stand and look down on the clouds or, on a clear day, look out to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, which lies 30 miles to the northeast. The viewpoint is the start of the famous hiking route: Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, which is one of the world’s best day hikes.
