The Abismo Anhumas is a cave located 23 km from Bonito, one of the largest ecotourism areas in South America. Discovered in 1970 after a fire in the local forest, it was open for visitation in 1999, after mapping and personnel training began. The small crack in the ground is just the beginning of rappelling, a technique for descent into the cave. To the bottom of the cave is 72 meters, which is equivalent to a 26-story building, in a tour that lasts about five minutes. After the rappelling, the visitor sets their feet on a floating deck built over a lake of crystal clear water reaching 80 meters deep with the width of a football field. Dozens of limestone cones fill the lake and its surroundings, and after dropping into the water, it feels like flying in a surreal, dreamlike environment. Scuba diving reveals the full breadth of one of the most sensational caves on the planet.
