Translating as ‘Island of Deer’, the tiny islet Elafonisi lies at Crete’s southwestern corner and is a paradise of crystal waters, white sands, and superb tourist services. The beach here has been argued to be the best in Greece, and for good reason; it boasts pink coral sands, exquisite turquoise sea, and the unique lagoon-type feeling. The islet is essentially a small strip that can be accessed by walking through shallow water at low tide. The more remote, nudist Kedrodasos Beach is another spectacular option. The whole area is important and protected for its phenomenal plants and flowers - it is home to more than 110 species. History and architecture enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the Moni Hrysoskalitissas Monastery, believed to be around a thousand years old.
