Nestled deep in the Cederberg Mountains, Wupperthal is a remote Moravian mission station that was founded in the 19th century and seems almost frozen in time. Beautiful historical buildings are dotted about town, which centres on the original Moravian church, built in 1835. Encircled by rugged mountain slopes blanketed with indigenous fynbos flora and several remaining Clanwilliam cedar trees – once prolific in the area but today extremely rare – Wupperthal is a haven for nature lovers, with several hiking trails meandering through the surrounds. It is most spectacular during August and September, when wild Namaqualand daisies sprout up in their thousands, transforming the landscape into a riot of vibrant colours.
