Chiang Rai Province, Thailand’s northernmost region, is a rugged landscape of forested mountains, river valleys and remote ethnic communities. Bordering Myanmar, Laos and Chiang Mai Province, it forms part of the historic Golden Triangle and serves as an excellent base for exploring the wider Mekong borderlands. The province is known for its diversity of indigenous hill-tribe villages, as well as its wealth of natural and cultural attractions. Highlights include the beautifully landscaped Mae Fah Luang Garden and the Doi Tung Royal Villa, the former residence of the late Princess Mother, set high on a mountain ridge with sweeping views. The region is also home to ancient temples dating back more than a millennium and numerous tea plantations where visitors can enjoy scenic walks and tastings. With its combination of cultural depth, mountain scenery and cross-border heritage, Chiang Rai Province offers one of northern Thailand’s most rewarding and atmospheric travel experiences.
