Anchoring the western end of the National Mall in Washington DC, the Lincoln Memorial honours Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the USA. The memorial stands over 30 m tall and is supported by 36 marble columns, each representing one of the US states as at the date of Lincoln’s death.

A 5.8 m-tall statue of Lincoln presides over the entrance with his famous Gettysburg Address etched on the wall to the left of it, and to the right, the entire Second Inaugural Address, given in March of 1865, not long before Lincoln’s death. Etched above the giant statue are the words: "In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever”. The Lincoln Memorial is open to the public 24/7 with rangers on duty from 9:30 am to 10 pm daily.
