Grado lies on the northeast coast of Italy in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. Spread over a peninsula and neighbouring islands, this town – with the Adriatic to its south and the Marano Lagoon to its north – is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, while also boasting historic attractions. Grado has a number of sandy beaches, such as Spiaggia Principale Grado, as well as Parc Aquatique, a waterpark for the whole family (with on-site spa). Nature lovers should visit the near-lying Cavanata Valley Regional Natural Reserve (with wetlands popular for birdwatching) and then island-hop in the Marano-Grado Lagoon, while sports such as wind-surfing, golf and tennis are also available. Meanwhile, history lovers should visit the Basilicas of Sant’Eufemia and Santa Maria delle Grazie, as well as the Barbana Sanctuary – located on an island within the lagoon.
