Rucu Pichincha is an incredible 4,784m high volcano on the eastern side of Quito. The trailhead begins at Cruz de Loma, a lookout point that is reached on a 10 minute ride on the highest gondola in South America, called the Teleferiqo. The hike to the top of Rucu Pichincha is about 10 km (6 miles) and will take 3-4 hours. The trail is best to take accompanied by an English speaking guide as sometimes mist can make it hard to follow and stay on the trail. Along the way, you will enjoy the most incredible views over the city of Quito as well as the surrounding Andean peaks of Antisana, Cayambe, Cotopaxi, Pasochoa and PumiƱahui.
It is a demanding hike to the top, but it is not a technical climb. It is important to give yourself a few days in Quito to get acclimatized to the altitude before embarking on this day adventure.
