Camp Xugana (or Xugana Island Lodge as it used to be known) is part of the Xugana private concession. Widely accepted as being the most spectacular permanent water site in the entire Okavango Delta with the most fabulous sunsets. The lodge is situated on a wooded island abutting the lagoon and takes full advantage of this magnificent site. With an open boma and an alfresco dining area facing an expanse of pristine water.
The lounge bar and dining areas are set back under thatch in the shade of fig and leadwood trees. The pool is another perfect place to relax. Camp Xugana accommodates just 16 guests in eight large raised reed and thatch chalets. The stylish chalets have twin beds, en-suite facilities with walk-in showers, overhead fans and a private deck overlooking the water, ideal for bird-watching.
Xugana is a perfect camp for honeymoon couples with an opportunity to have a private dinner on a floating sampan in the Okavango Delta.
Camp Xugana’s activities revolve around the water. You enjoy mokoro trips in dugout canoes, combined with walking on surrounding islands in the concession. Motorised boat excursions allow you to explore further into the Delta. Bird-watching opportunities are outstanding and fishing for bream and tiger fish are also offered as activities at the lodge (on a limited basis only).
You shouldn’t expect the same concentration of big game as you would find in drier areas. (This is why we usually recommend combining Camp Xugana with a land-based camp such as its sister lodges, Camp Moremi or Camp Xakanaxa to get a balanced Okavango Delta experience.) However there is not much which beats exploring the Okavango Delta by mokoro and boat.
Guided game walks on the islands allow you to track some of the larger game that inhabits this watery paradise. The elusive Sitatunga antelope has found refuge in this pristine wetland ecosystem, as well as birds such as the African Fish eagle and Pel’s Fishing owl, which are magnificent in flight.
Note: A water-based safari camp such as Camp Xugana is not really suitable for older frail people, especially if you have hip problems. Water-based safaris involve a fair amount of climbing in and out of boats and low mokoros as well as walking safaris.
