Located in the arid Department of Ica, Paracas National Reserve spans 335 000 hectares and serves to protect the marine-coastal ecosystems, namely the Paracas Peninsula, Independencia Bay, San Gallán Island, Paracas Bay and Independencia Island. The area boasts an array of wildlife including 216 species of birds, 36 species of mammals, 10 species of reptiles, 168 species of fish and a large number of invertebrates. The area also features over 100 archaeological sites that demonstrate the culture and lifestyle of the ancient Paracas people.
