Castelvecchio di Rocca is situated in the northwest of Italy in Liguria. This medieval village is best explored as a day-trip from Genoa (about 70 kilometres away), Savona (about 35 kilometres) and other nearby towns. This tiny town grew up around the – now ruined – Castle of Castelvecchio di Rocca, which was built in the 9th and 10th centuries. The streets of beautiful Castelvecchio di Rocca are old and narrow and travellers are advised to leave their vehicles on the outskirts of town, and take a step back in time to enjoy the 11th-century stone village on foot. Finally, there are only a handful of eateries (which serve simple local fair), accommodation options and shops – be sure to sample this region’s famous cold-pressed olive oil and its wine, made from local Pigato grapes.
