Shalimar Bagh, also known as Shalimar Garden, or the Abode of Love, is a grand Mughal garden in Srinagar, created in 1619 by Emperor Jahangir for his wife, Nur Jahan. Overlooking the serene Dal Lake, it is the largest of Srinagar’s Mughal gardens and is celebrated for its exquisite blend of natural beauty and refined Mughal design. The garden features a three‑tiered terraced layout aligned along a central water channel, with fountains, lush lawns, and ancient chinar trees that offer shade and seasonal colour. Arched niches behind waterfalls, known as chini khanas, add to its architectural charm. Today, Shalimar Garden is a tranquil public park and remains one of Srinagar’s most iconic landmarks, admired for its romantic heritage, serene ambience, and picturesque vistas.
