Situated southeast of Machu Picchu's site, Patallacta is an archaeological site located in the lush and green Urubamba Valley of Cusco, Peru. It consists of an ascending sequence of terraces adapted to the area's topography. These platforms were dedicated to cultivating agricultural products for the Inca and his royal ayllu. There are also a set of archaeological buildings which housed many occupants, including travellers and soldiers manning the nearby Willkaraqay "fort", and a rounded-walled sanctuary known as Pulpituyoc that had religious and ceremonial functions. Today, visitors can explore the remains of Patallacta, which is divided into four distinct sections, each with a central plaza. Many Inca trail tours will stop at Patallacta, which is the easiest way to explore the site.
