Lambert’s Bay Bird Island Nature Reserve in the Western Cape, South Africa, is a small but vital sanctuary situated 100 metres offshore. Visitors can watch thousands of Cape gannets from a specially designed lookout, explore the museum with displays of bones and marine artefacts, and spot seals basking on the rocks. The reserve also offers interpretive signage and a bird hide for closer observation. Notably, Bird Island is one of only six breeding colonies of Cape gannets worldwide, and the only one open to the public. Managed by CapeNature, it plays a crucial role in seabird conservation and education.
