Mariana was the first village in Minas Gerais. Later, it was declared a city and finally the capital of the State of Minas Gerais. Despite its simplicity, it is one of the most important cities of the gold circuit. The city is home to rich architecture buildings projected in baroque style, considered one of the most beautiful in Brazil, and it has also art works made by Antonio Francisco Lisboa – Aleijadinho. Other artists have also left their legacy, such as the sculptor and painter Manuel da Costa Ataíde, the poet and musician Claudio Manuel da Costa, and the poet, orator and Augustinian friar Santa Rita Durão.
