Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple is located in Kyoto, Japan. The temple was established around 1000 years ago and its purpose was to be the resting place for those who died without kin. In front of the temple, visitors can view around 8000 small Buddha statues which were placed in memory of each person who died without kin. Every year on the 23rd and 24th of August, thousands of candles are lit for the Sento Kuyo ceremony which is held in memory of all the abandoned souls. The site is open daily from March to November 09:00 to 16:00 and from December to February 09:00 to 15:30.
