The Asaro Mudmen are located in the Asaro village in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. According to legend, the Asaro people were defeated by an enemy tribe and forced into the Asaro River. When they rose from the river banks at dusk, trying to escape, the enemy saw the mud-covered Asaro and was terrified at their ghost-like appearance. Despite their fearsome appearance and slow spectre-like movements, they are some of the most welcoming friendly people around. Today, visitors can see their dances up close, learn to make a face mask, and learn about the culture in an engaging way by visiting this site.
