The town of Gualaceo is found is south-central Ecuador. Nicknamed the ‘Garden of Azuay Province’, Gualaceo boasts fountain-filled parks, a wonderful Open Market (where delicious fresh produce is available) and great natural attractions. Don’t miss Ecuagenera, a showcase of Ecuadorian orchids, or the Bosque Protector Aguarongo (the Aguarongo Forest Reserve), which is home to some excellent hiking trails and a number of unique plant and butterfly species. Gualaceo is also a great place to shop for crafts such as panos (woven shawls dyed with indigo) - and visitors can learn about how these garments are made at La Casa de la Makana. Gualaceo is a popular day trip from Cuenca (38 kilometers away), but visitors are encouraged to spend some time in the area and check out neighboring towns of Chordeleg and Paute.
