Seweweekspoort has been referred to as one of the “seven wonders” of the Cape, and described as a “monument to creation”. This 17-kilometre-long, rugged road takes motorists through the Swartberg Mountains, past nature at its wildest. Towering cliffs, jagged rock formations and some narrow passes make for a spectacular drive. Confusion surrounds its name – ‘seven weeks port’. Explanations include the length of time it took a commando to take a band of highwaymen into the Great Karoo, the name of one of the first missionaries from the nearby Amalienstein mission station whose name the locals could not pronounce properly and the Seven-week’s fern.
