Signal Hill is a 2,5 km long ridge above Cape Town which forms the northern extremity of the Cape Peninsula Mountain Chain. It is included in the Table Mountain Nature Reserve and is a very special location – for 2 reasons.

The critically endangered Peninsula Shale Renosterveld vegetation grows on Signal Hill. This unique vegetation used to be the dominant ecosystem of the Cape Town City Bowl. As it is completely endemic, occurring nowhere else in the world, the sprawl of urban growth has severely damaged it. Now, Signal Hill has the only surviving sample of this vegetation in the world.

The other reason Signal Hill is special is that along the Signal Hill Ridge, towards Camps Bay and on the Camps Bay Drive side, lies the kramat of Sheikh Ali also known as Sayed Bassier. Unfortunately, nothing is known of the history of Sheikh Ali.
