The Herzog August Library, in Wolfenbüttel, also known as Bibliotheca Augusta, was founded by Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, in 1572. Under the learned book collector and Prince of Peace Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, the library accumulated the largest book collection in Europe. Today it is seen as a library of international importance for its collection from the Middle Ages and early modern Europe. The library is overseen by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture.
