Join us for an evening of stargazing, and experience Southern Africa's stellar BIG FIVE at the eyepiece of a telescope, with binoculars and with the naked eye.
Kos Coronaios, the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa's Observing Director and Outreach Officer, will how you amongst the many delights of our vast Universe, some of the constellations, stars and deep-sky objects only visible south of the equator, as well as some of the better known gems that are so much brighter in our beautiful dark, unpolluted skies. You will learn about the exciting life cycles of stars and ancient astronomy discoveries that have helped us to better understand our universe. Comparing western mythology with Southern Africa star lore, Kos will point out some of the patterns in the evening sky that make up the stories our ancient ancestors told around the campfire. View some of the constellations, star clusters and nebulae only visible in the southern hemisphere and hear about the exciting life cycle of stars and ancient astronomy discoveries that have helped enable us to understand our universe.
The evening's Night Sky Safari is around an hour long and is suitable for all ages.
Equipment: Fully computerised "GO TO" Meade 10-inch Newtonian reflector or 10-inch Schmidt Casegrain, assorted eyepieces, solar filter, CCD & digital SLR cameras. Imaging camera for real time images on screen of planets and deep-sky objects as viewed through the telescope.
