El Tesorito Creek, flowing from the mountains behind Pacuare Lodge into a narrow gorge, offers a thrilling outdoor adventure amidst the rainforest. This experience includes rock climbing, a small waterfall descent, sliding along cables, swinging through the jungle like Tarzan, and a 30-meter (100-foot) rock face rappel. It’s a light yet exhilarating adventure in a stunning natural setting.
The El Tesorito adventure starts and ends with a 15-minute hike through the rainforest and includes safety training and equipment, plus an introduction to rappelling. You’ll practice on shorter walls (2 to 20 meters) before tackling the final 30-meter (90-foot) rappel. This tour is available right after breakfast or lunch.
The indigenous community of Tsiobata, located in the Cabecar region of Talamanca, Costa Rica, is a unique destination for lovers of ecotourism and cultural tourism. Surrounded by lush tropical rainforest and crystal-clear rivers, Tsiobata offers an authentic experience where visitors can immerse themselves in the ancestral traditions of the Cabecar Indigenous people. As dawn breaks and the rainforest stirs to life, we step out from the comfort of our bungalows to welcome the start of a new day, surrounded by dappled shadows and misty morning light.
Costa Rica is a true birdwatcher’s paradise. Nestled between North and South America, the country attracts migratory species from both continents. With around 850 bird species—630 of which are resident—there’s always a chance to encounter something extraordinary right outside your door.
Experience the best of Mother Nature as you observe the vibrant birdlife and wildlife native to the region. Keep an eye out for the Montezuma oropendola, known for its high nests in towering trees. The area around the lodge is rich in exotic bird species, including the Sun Bittern, Red-throated Ant-Tanager, Black-cheeked Woodpecker, and a variety of colorful toucans. Our knowledgeable guide will bring along a telescope to help identify the different species, and binoculars are also available. This one-and-a-half-hour tour concludes with a return to the lodge for breakfast.

Rafting In
Begin your adventure with a scenic drive from San José through Cartago and the slopes of the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes. Enjoy a 7 km (4.3-mile) rafting journey through Class II and III rapids, surrounded by lush rainforest and the protected territory of the Cabécar Indigenous community. Between rapids, look for toucans, monkeys, butterflies, and herons. The experience lasts approximately 1.5 hours and is suitable for guests aged 9 and older. Breakfast at a traditional Costa Rican restaurant and transfers from San José are included. Guests who prefer not to raft may arrive by 4×4 transfer.
Rafting Out
Depart Pacuare Lodge on an exhilarating 18 km (11.2-mile) rafting adventure through Class III and IV rapids. Navigate spectacular canyons, pass towering waterfalls, and admire the dramatic rainforest scenery along the river. Enjoy a riverside picnic lunch, weather permitting. This approximately 3-hour experience is recommended for guests aged 12 and older. The journey ends at the Pacuare Lodge Operations Center in Siquirres, where showers, changing rooms, secure luggage storage, and a comfortable rest area are available before departure. Guests who prefer not to raft may leave by 4×4 transfer.

If you read the guest comments about the food at the Pacuare Lodge, you might get the impression that we have a chef trained in haute cuisine. It sure seems like it. The truth is that the lodge’s food is simply the product of our own love of cooking, a sentiment that we transferred to the jungle and emulsified – to use a culinary term – with the talent of our local staff, teaching them how to prepare memorable meals.
The Pacuare Lodge’s kitchen staff is made up of young people from nearby communities. We don’t really have a chef; we’ve simply developed the talent of local people and taught them the secrets of great food. We like to surprise our guests with novel combinations of flavors, local ingredients, innovative recipes, and beautiful presentations. It isn’t fancy, but it’s delicious enough to warrant opening a bottle of good wine, which is why we keep our cellar well stocked with vintages from around the world.

As we assembled our kitchen team, our primary goal was to find local people who loved to cook. Though they come from rural backgrounds, we’ve built upon their culinary traditions and nurtured their passion for cooking. The results are reflected by the hundreds of comments in the Pacuare Lodge’s guest book from people who were amazed to find outstanding food in such a remote and wild place.
As food enthusiasts, we make it a priority to purchase fresh and quality ingredients and to do innovative things with them, so it is not uncommon to see a fusion of Costa Rican and exotic dishes. Our menu is constantly evolving to reflect the influences of other countries and cultures that we visit, or whose cuisines we enjoy, but it will always be based on our culinary roots.
