One of the most scenic coastal roads in Vietnam, Hai Van Pass is a dramatic mountain route linking Hue and Danang. Winding along the side of the mountains with sweeping views over the sea, it is one of those journeys where the route itself is a highlight rather than simply the way to get from one place to another. For many travellers, it is one of the most memorable overland drives in central Vietnam.
What makes Hai Van Pass especially appealing is the contrast of landscape. On one side are forested mountains and misty ridgelines, and on the other are broad coastal views across the bay. The name translates roughly as “Ocean Cloud Pass”, which suits it well, as sea mist often drifts up into the hills and gives the whole area a dramatic, shifting atmosphere.
Historically, the pass also marked an important division between the kingdoms of Champa and Dai Viet, which adds another layer of interest beyond the scenery alone. Although the modern tunnel now carries most through traffic, the old pass road remains one of Vietnam’s great scenic drives and is far more rewarding than taking the faster route underneath the mountain.
For most travellers, Hai Van Pass is best experienced during a private transfer between Hue and Hoi An or Danang, ideally with time to stop for photographs and simply enjoy the views. It is not a major monument or formal attraction, but it is one of central Vietnam’s most iconic landscapes and a very worthwhile part of the journey.
