The Dungan Mosque is a magnificent religious site located in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan. It is the only Chinese-style mosque in Central Asia and is a testament to the unique fusion of Chinese and Islamic designs, reflecting the diversity of Karakol’s past. The mosque was built in 1907 by a small group of Dungans, Chinese Muslims who had fled their homeland decades before to escape religious persecution. The mosque’s Chinese-style architecture, with towering gates and sweeping rooflines, is a beautiful example of Dungan craftsmanship. Visitors can find intricate wooden carvings, impressive stained glass windows, and a vibrant prayer hall inside the mosque. The mosque is also home to several artefacts from the Dungan community, including coins, porcelain dishes, and books. Although the Dungan population is now small in Karakol, their legacy lives in the Dungan Mosque. The mosque is open to visitors and provides a unique opportunity to explore the history of this vibrant community.
