Located west of San Pedro de Atacama, Valle de la Luna is north of the Cordillera de la Sal, in the Atacama desert. The site has incredible formations of sand and stone with a variety of colours that have been carved over the years by the elements of nature. The area also hosts dry lakes where the salt composition adds a white layer. There is also a variety of caves. At sunset, the area comes alive with a variety of colours from pink, purple and orange. The area was declared a natural sanctuary in 1982 and is part of Reserva Nacional los Flamencos.
