Regarded as one of Kenya's last great wilderness areas, the Matthews Range lies in the remote north of Samburu County, between the arid plains of northern Kenya and the Laikipia region. Rising above the surrounding savannah, the range is cloaked in dense indigenous forest, where clear mountain streams, waterfalls, natural rock pools, ancient cycads and rare orchids thrive. The mountains are home to elephants, buffalo, leopards, greater kudu, monkeys and a rich variety of other wildlife, along with more than 200 bird species and an exceptional diversity of butterflies. Guided treks lead through unspoilt landscapes, while the surrounding conservancies offer rewarding wildlife viewing and opportunities to visit local Samburu communities and experience their culture.
