Mycenae is an archaeological site in Greece. The ancient citadel of Mycenae is located in the northeast part of Peloponnese in Argolis. In the second millennium BC, Mycenae was one of the major centers of Greek civilization, a military stronghold that dominated much of southern Greece. Several ruins occupy this site, including the Palace of Mycenae with its central location atop the citadel. Staterooms of the palace were arranged around a central court, and in Mycenean times, the palace was lavishly decorated with vivid frescoes and mosaics.
