In Prague, Josefov was a former Jewish ghetto between the Old Town and the Vltava River. The area's history dates back to the 13th century when Jews were ordered to vacate their homes around the city and settle in the area. Jews were also banned from living elsewhere in the town and the immigration of Jews from other European countries added to the overcrowding of Josefov. The Jewish Quarter has six synagogues and a cemetery.
