St. Augustine is a popular tourist destination located on Florida’s northeast coast. Founded in 1565, the city is the oldest European settlement in the United States and is awash with historical sights. Begin at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, a fort that dates back to 1695 and provides a good introduction to the Spanish-colonial architecture of the region, before visiting the city’s two major museums. The Lightner Museum and the Villa Zorayda Museum are worth seeing as much for the collections as for the gorgeous buildings which house them, and the Colonial Quarter offers a fun and interactive ‘living museum’ where aspects of 18th-century village life are recreated. When your sightseeing is done, head to the white sands of St. Augustine Beach to enjoy the sun and surf.
