Located in the northeastern area of Guatemala’s Peten Department, bordering the Tikal National Park to the west, the Yaxha National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, boasts several ancient Mayan cities, diverse wetlands, and beautiful lagoons. The massive size, incredible setting and unique surrounding flora and fauna make Yaxha the most exciting of the cities, once home to around 20 000 people and still boasting the sky-scraping Structure 216 in the East Acropolis. Other cities to visit include Topoxte, Nakum and Naranjo. The Yaxha Lagoon is home to one of the largest populations of the endemic Moreletti crocodile, as well as the Central American River Turtle, and over 40 mammal species inhabit the jungle including Spider Monkeys, jaguars, pumas, Azara’s foxes, and American Tapirs. A huge variety of colourful birds can be seen, including Toucans, kingfishers, and many more.
