Cape Foulwind is a scenic wilderness reserve on the northwest coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Located on a headland that juts into the Tasman Sea, the reserve is most easily accessed from Westport (10 kilometres away). The Cape Foulwind Walkway is the area’s key activity: visitors can choose between a 30-minute circuit to view the Tauranga Bay Seal Colony, or else take a longer (at least two hours) trail to the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse. This latter route tracks along coastal bluffs with panoramic ocean views, and is marked with informative interpretation panels that give a detailed sense of the history of this rugged promontory. Note that there is no accommodation in Cape Foulwind itself – Westport and Charleston are the closest towns offering lodgings.
