Located just outside the city precincts, the Wat Saket (Golden Mount) is a man-made hill topped with a large golden chedi (a hemispherical structure containing relics) dating back to the 1300s. Other buildings on the grounds include a chapel, ordination hall, and library. At the base of the mount, visitors will notice a neglected cemetery containing many shrines, plaques, and other memorials. A comfortable walk up a spiral stairway with about 300 steps takes visitors to the top where an admission fee is payable to access the building and rooftop terrace from where 360-degree views of Bangkok can be enjoyed. A temple fair with all the required pomp and ceremony is held each year in November, drawing many devotees and tourists who come to participate in or observe the candlelit procession to the chedi and attend the Buddha worshipping ceremony.
