One of Uganda’s best-kept secrets is part of the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary’s border. A 10-kilometre swamp border, The majestic Lugogo Wetlands, is an integral part of the ecosystem and is home to a multitude of animals and rare birds. It provides guests with some of the most unparalleled opportunities for bird viewing in Uganda, including the threatened and endangered shoebill stork. The amazing birding is due to three biospheres that are integrated in the wetlands resulting in vast numbers of birds not normally seen residing in the area. Taking a pair of binoculars and well-worn bird book on the usual tour, avid bird watchers will be ecstatic to view some of the 350+ species found on the sanctuary, including white crested turacos, giant kingfishers, palmnut vultures, Barbets and 11 of the woodpecker species, including the speckled-breasted woodpecker.
