The Tokyo Imperial Palace is the primary residence of the Emperor of Japan. The buildings on the grounds include the main palace, the private residences of the imperial family, an archive, administrative offices, and museums.

The palace with its grounds is located on the site of the former Edo Castle and many of the castle’s moats, defensive walls, gatehouses, and turrets still remain.

Official tours of the inside of the grounds lasting 75 minutes are available but must be booked up to a month in advance. The east garden is open to the public and no reservations are required.
