Tsukiji Market, now known as the Tsukiji Outer Market, remains one of Tokyo’s most popular destinations for fresh seafood and local food culture. While the wholesale fish auctions moved to Toyosu in 2018, the surrounding network of small shops and restaurants continues to thrive.

The narrow lanes are lined with stalls selling fresh tuna, shellfish, dried seaweed, knives, ceramics and specialist cooking ingredients. It is a lively and sensory experience, with vendors preparing skewers of grilled seafood, tamagoyaki omelettes and other small bites ready to eat.

Tsukiji is particularly well known for its sushi restaurants, many of which open early in the morning. Some are small, counter-style establishments that focus on a limited but exceptionally fresh menu.

Although it attracts visitors, Tsukiji remains a working market area where local chefs still source ingredients. The atmosphere feels energetic but more organic and traditional than the structured environment of Toyosu.

A visit to Tsukiji works well in the morning and can easily be combined with nearby Ginza or Hamarikyu Gardens for a varied half-day exploration.

Expert Tips

Arrive early, ideally before 9 am, for the freshest atmosphere and shorter restaurant queues. Some stalls close by early afternoon.

Carry cash for small purchases and follow signage regarding eating areas. It is courteous to step aside when enjoying street food rather than walking while eating.
