Kusakabe Folk Museum is one of Takayama’s finest historic merchant houses, set in the old town and offering a lovely insight into the town’s prosperous Edo-period past. The building was once the home of the Kusakabe family, successful merchants and moneylenders, and is now preserved as a folk museum.
The house is especially admired for its architecture. Inside, you’ll find dark polished timber, high open ceilings, thick beams, lattice windows and a beautifully balanced sense of space. It’s a wonderful example of traditional Takayama craftsmanship, showing how local carpenters created homes that were both practical for daily life and elegant in their details.
The museum displays household items, lacquerware, ceramics, tools, festival objects and everyday pieces that help tell the story of life in old Takayama. It’s not a large museum, but it rewards slow looking, particularly for travellers interested in architecture, interiors and local history.
Kusakabe Folk Museum combines easily with Yoshijima Heritage House, Sanmachi Suji, Takayama Jinya and the Miyagawa Morning Market, all of which are within a comfortable walking distance. It’s a good stop on a self-guided day through Takayama, especially if you’d like to understand the town beyond its attractive streets and shopfronts.
Try to visit earlier in the day if you can, as the quieter atmosphere makes it easier to appreciate the building’s timberwork, proportions and calm, old-town character.
