Kanazawa Castle is located next to Kenroku-en Gardens.
From 1583 to the end of the Edo Period, the castle, was the seat of the powerful Maeda Clan. It burnt down several times over the many years, most recently in 1881, where only two storehouses and the Ishikawa-mon Gate survived.
Visitors can enter the castle's upper floor free of charge, where displays of the gate's history and construction can be seen.
Turrets and a long storehouse were rebuilt and feature displays of traditional carpentry, all now open for public viewing.
