Lake Ashinoko formed after Mount Hakone's last eruption 3000 years ago.

The lake has become the symbol of Hakone, with Mount Fuji in the background. The region surrounding the lake is generally undeveloped, featuring small towns in the east and north and a few lakeside resorts.
