The Sagano Romantic Train is a scenic sightseeing railway that runs between Arashiyama and Kameoka, following the Hozugawa River through a narrow mountain gorge. Operating at a leisurely pace, it offers an enjoyable way to experience the natural beauty of western Kyoto.

The vintage-style train travels approximately seven kilometres, passing forested hillsides, rocky riverbanks and seasonal landscapes. In spring, cherry blossoms frame parts of the route, while autumn brings vibrant foliage in shades of red and gold. Each season offers a different perspective.

Some carriages feature open windows, allowing fresh air and unobstructed views, while others are enclosed. The journey takes around 25 minutes, making it a short but memorable addition to a visit to Arashiyama.

Many travellers choose to combine the train with a riverboat ride back down the Hozugawa River, creating a varied half-day experience that balances gentle rail travel with a scenic boat journey.

The Sagano Romantic Train suits those who enjoy landscapes, photography and a slower-paced excursion beyond central Kyoto.

Expert Tips

Seats are reserved and can sell out during peak foliage seasons, so book in advance if travelling in spring or autumn.

Arrive early at the station to ensure smooth boarding. If choosing an open carriage, bring a light layer, as it can feel cool depending on the weather.
