Owakudani is a volcanic valley that was formed approximately 3,000 years ago, after the volcano of Hakone erupted.
The valley is still an active volcanic zone and is filled with active sulphur vents, and hot springs. Visitors may purchase hard boiled eggs that have been cooked in the volcano's waters, becoming blackened by the sulphur, which has said to length a person's life by years.
Owakudani is accessible either cable car, or by using the Hakone Ropeway.
